Homage to Charlie Haden by the Gonzalo Rubalcaba quartet.
With 15 nominations and 4 Grammys under his belt, Gonzalo Rubalcaba is a force to be reckoned with in modern jazz. He was born in 1963 in Havana, absorbing traditional music at his father’s (a pianist/composer) and brothers’ (a pianist and a bassist) side. He received classical training and a degree in composing, while at the same time working as a drummer and pianist. After graduating he toured Cuba, Europe, Africa and Asia with a band, initially as a sideman and then with his own group, Grupo Proyecto. During those years a series of recordings took place at Egrem Studios in Havana and Messidor Studios in Frankfurt. His meeting with Dizzy Gillespie (1985), Charlie Haden and the President of Blue Note Records, Bruce Lundvall, led him to the Dominican Republic in 1991 and to Miami in 1996. This was the beginning of an international recording career for Toshiba/EMI and Blue Note Records. Apart from his four Grammys, he has received a wealth of commendations. At Sani Hill he and his quartet – Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Bob Bruya (bass), Sam Hart (saxophone) and Marcelo Perez (drums) – will present an homage to Charlie Haden. “The way in which Charlie opened the path for me, made all the difference. It is an honour to have been able to call him my best friend. In spending so much time with him, I learned things; not just about music; about love, about our families and about ourselves”, he said.
Gonzalo Rubalcaba appeared with his late collaborator and friend Charlie Haden in the framework of the 2005 Sani Festival. It was a magical meeting that went down in the history of the Festival.
He first appeared in Greece as a guest of Sani Festival in 2002.
